Global Water Shortage
SHARE

The world is facing an unprecedented water shortage crisis today. This is no longer under the carpet, since scarcity of water is something that is hitting global communities hard across regions. There are several reasons for water shortage in the current scenario, chief among them being climate change. Erosion and silting are hindering water quality. At the same time, infrastructure collapses, overpopulation, issues with distribution systems, other contamination due to pollution, and poor resource management are also major reasons.

Hence, a large section of people across the world are now being denied the right to proper sanitation and safe drinking water. This is where contemporary technology can be helpful in tackling water shortages, right from water desalination to more advanced irrigation systems and other water-saving devices.

Leveraging Modern Technology to Fix the Global Water Shortage

Now that you have an idea of some of the key reasons for water shortage, it is time to examine how modern technologies can come into play for tackling the global crisis. Here are some aspects worth noting in this regard:

  • Desalination– This is a helpful concept of reverse osmosis, where saltwater is converted into freshwater. It is done by filtering out salt and various other impurities using pressure and a membrane. However, it’s important to note that desalination is energy-intensive and costly.
  • Renewable Energy Solutions– Solar-powered desalination with PV (photovoltaic) panels and solar thermal systems enables tapping renewable energy for powering desalination. This makes the whole process more sustainable, to say the least.
  • Advanced Systems of Irrigation– These are methods for the direct delivery of water to the roots of plants, thereby lowering the loss of water through runoff and evaporation. For instance, drip irrigation.
  • Smart Irrigation Technologies– There are several technologically advanced systems which deploy IoT (Internet of Things), sensors, and AI (Artificial Intelligence) for tracking soil moisture and weather conditions, along with crop requirements. They can then optimise irrigation schedules and lower the usage of water accordingly.
  • Smart Management of Water– There are various systems for smart water management, which deploy IoT sensors for monitoring the water quality and overall flow. AI-based analytics predict water demand and optimise supply and distribution accordingly. At the same time, they also work to identify quick infrastructural leaks to minimise wastage.
  • Smart Meters– These smart meters enable real-time data access regarding water usage on consumer devices. This will help them conserve water more sustainably.

There are several new-age devices, such as low-flow fixtures, that considerably reduce water consumption at the household level. Additionally, virtual submetering technology monitors water usage in buildings. At the same time, technology is also enabling water quality monitoring with drones, sensors, and other remote sensing technologies. It goes a long way towards swiftly identifying pollutants and any water quality changes. Researchers are also using advanced water treatments, including those based on nanotechnology in filtration and membrane science for water purification and contaminant removal.

Tackling Global Water Shortage With Technology – The Only Solution Ahead

Awareness of the reasons for water shortage is crucial. It is also important for societies to embrace new-age technologies for tackling the crisis more effectively. There are diverse solutions for monitoring water consumption, identifying leaks, and also for distribution/supply optimisation based on demand. These can help immensely towards fixing water wastage and inequitable consumption patterns.
